CPAP Battery Backup for Power Outages: Nights per Battery

How many nights a power station runs a CPAP with and without the heated humidifier, with the honest caveats on medical equipment.

Updated October 27, 2026 · By the OutageWatt team · How we calculate

In short

A CPAP is one of the easiest loads to back up: about 30 W without the humidifier, so a 1,000 Wh station runs it for roughly 3.7 nights. Turning on the heated humidifier can more than double the draw. These are estimates; your machine's supplier can give you its exact figure.

A note before the numbers

We are not medical professionals. ResMed and Philips don't publish a single “watts” figure for their machines, so the values below are working estimates that reflect commonly reported draws and the power supply ratings. If you depend on your machine, ask your equipment supplier for its consumption with your settings, keep a backup plan, and tell your utility: many have medical baseline or priority programs.

8-hour nights through the AC outlet at 88% inverter efficiency. A DC cable from your CPAP maker avoids most of that loss.

Stretch every night

  • Turn off the humidifier and heated tube for the outage if your doctor agrees: it is by far the biggest draw.
  • Use the maker's DC adapter where one exists, plugged into the station's 12 V output.
  • Charge the station during the day from solar or a car if the outage runs long.
  • Test a full night on battery before storm season, not during the storm.

To cover the fridge and Wi-Fi too, run the CPAP + fridge scenario.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights will a power station run a CPAP?

Without the humidifier, a CPAP drawing around 30 W uses about 240 Wh a night, so a 1,000 Wh station covers about 3.7 nights. With a heated humidifier at about 65 W, it's closer to 1.7. Check your own machine's figure with your supplier.

Should I use the DC cable instead of the AC outlet?

If your machine maker sells a DC power cable or converter for it, yes: it skips the inverter's 10–15% loss and can stretch runtime noticeably. Use only the maker's approved accessory.

Is a power station enough for an oxygen concentrator?

Only as a short bridge. A home concentrator draws around 350 W continuously, about 8 kWh a day. Anyone on oxygen needs a plan made with their doctor and supplier, backup cylinders, and registration with their utility's medical program.
