Will a Power Station Run a Refrigerator? Runtime by Size (2026)
Yes, if it can start the compressor. Real runtimes for 1 to 5 kWh stations, why the start-up surge matters more than capacity, and how long food stays safe.

The two numbers that matter
A refrigerator is an awkward load. Most of the time it draws next to nothing, then the compressor kicks in, pulls several times its running power for a fraction of a second, and settles at a few hundred watts until the box is cold again. That cycle is why two numbers matter instead of one.
Energy: ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators use 336 to 429 kWh a year, about 1 kWh a day. That is what drains the battery. Start-up power: generator makers size a fridge at 700 W running and about 2,200 W extra to start. A power station that can't cover that peak shuts off or refuses to start the compressor, however full its battery is.

Stations marked “Surge not published” may well start a fridge; their makers simply don't publish the number, and we won't promise what a spec sheet doesn't. If you already own one, try it before the storm: plug the fridge into it and wait for the compressor to kick in. If the station trips, it can't start it.
Make the battery last longer
- Keep the doors shut. A closed fridge stays food-safe for about 4 hours with no power at all, which you can use: run it two hours, rest it two.
- Turn off the ice maker and any “express” or quick-cool mode before the outage.
- Fill empty space with water bottles: thermal mass keeps the temperature steady between cycles.
- Add solar if the outage may last days: a few hundred watts of panels on a clear day covers a fridge's daily energy.
If the power is already out, our food-safety timer counts down the USDA's 4-hour fridge and 48-hour freezer windows.

How long will a 1,000 Wh power station run a refrigerator?
About 20 h for an ENERGY STAR refrigerator using roughly 1 kWh a day, after inverter losses. An older or larger fridge can use twice that, which halves the runtime.
What size power station do I need for a refrigerator?
One with at least 1,500 W of continuous output and a published surge of about 3,000 W to start the compressor, and enough capacity for your outage: roughly 1.2 kWh per day of fridge.
Can I unplug the fridge and only run it a few hours a day?
Yes. Keeping the door shut and running the fridge for an hour or two every few hours stretches a small battery much further, as long as the inside stays at 40 °F or below. An appliance thermometer takes the guesswork out.
