Torn between two? Each duel runs both units through the same six outages.

Which station runs which appliance

One appliance at a time, at its typical daily use, battery only. “No” means the unit can't start it (surge), can't carry it (output) or lacks 240 V. Our data, free to cite with a link.

Daily use assumed: fridge 24 h (ENERGY STAR ≈1 kWh/day), sump pump 2 h of pumping, furnace blower 12 h, CPAP 8 h, well pump 1.5 h, window AC 8 h. Change any of these in the planner.

How we picked

We start from the outage, not the spec sheet. The first test is whether a unit can start and carry the loads people actually need: a refrigerator compressor, a sump pump, a furnace blower. That rules out more units than capacity does. Then we look at runtime per dollar, recharge speed (wall and solar), and whether the maker sells a proper way to connect to your panel.

Fridge, Wi-Fi & lights: the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 gets the pick because 2.0 kW of output and a published 3.0 kW surge leave room to run a microwave next to the fridge, at $499.99. The BLUETTI AC180 stores slightly more energy for the same price but BLUETTI doesn't publish its surge rating, so we can't promise it starts a compressor.

Whole circuits: the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus has the highest surge rating we found (14 kW in its US manual) and native 120/240 V, which is what central AC and deep well pumps need to start. Its price is the one we saw reported on Jackery's store and is flagged until we read it directly.

Before you buy

  • A power station only powers your house wiring through a transfer switch, an interlock or the maker's home panel, installed by a licensed electrician. Your options.
  • LFP (LiFePO4) batteries last thousands of cycles and are the safer chemistry to keep in a home. Every unit here is sold as LFP; where we could only confirm that from a retailer, its card says so.
  • Keep it charged: most lose a few percent a month in storage. Top it up before storm season.

Questions people ask

What size power station do I need for home backup?

For a fridge, Wi-Fi, lights and phones through one night, about 1 kWh with at least 1,500 W of output. To add a sump pump or furnace blower for a day or more, look at 2–4 kWh with a surge rating above 3,000 W. To feed circuits in your panel, including 240 V well pumps, you need a 120/240 V unit and a transfer switch.

Can a power station power a whole house?

Not the way the grid does. The largest units we list deliver 6–7.2 kW, enough for many circuits but not for an electric range, a dryer and central AC at once. Pick the circuits that matter and connect them through a transfer switch or the maker's home panel.

Are these tested by you?

No. We compare makers' published specs and US store prices, checked on the date shown, and we calculate runtimes with a stated method. We flag any spec we could only confirm from a retailer.
